Collins Brothers in Special Concert

The Collins Brothers, Randall and F.C., and their Blairsville Bluegrass Band are joining forces with the Union County Historical Society to present a concert to bring attention to and benefit one of Union County's most active and needed organizations, Meals on Wheels.

The Union County Senior Center under the leadership of Kathy Hill provides lunches through the Meals on Wheels program to over one hundred Union County citizens. Fifty-nine citizens have hot lunches brought to their homes five days of the week and frozen lunches for the week-ends. Some residents who live too far away to receive hot lunches daily are provided frozen lunches for one or two weeks at a time. There are usually twenty to twenty-five Union Countians who enjoy hot lunches at the Senior Center.

Kathy says the Senior Center depends upon volunteers to deliver the lunches throughout the county. These kind, generous people not only volunteer their time, but their automobiles and expenses as well. There are about thirty people who volunteer, plus substitutes. With the rapid increase in gasoline prices, more volunteers are needed to help spread the cost to the volunteers.

The Meals on Wheels program has a budget of $250,000.00 per year. Federal, state, and local governments fund a part of the program. Lately, funding has been cut back on both the federal and state level. The Union County Commissioner has stepped forward with an increase in local funding, but, in any case, donations and fund-raising projects are necessary to provide the necessary funds.

The Collins Brothers are native Union Countians whose ancestors were among the very first white settlers in the area. They started playing at an early age and come from a long line of musicians. Their musical prowess is proven in the many years of acclaim and the number of awards they've won in the music industry. They surround themselves in their band, The Blairsville Bluegrass Band, with other renowned and accomplished musicians. Crystal Murphy plays fiddle, Kerry Warbington plays banjo, Morris Hagood plays fiddle, Chuck Nation plays mandolin, and Kenneth Young plays bass.

The concert will begin at 7:30 on Saturday night, August 2. The Old Courthouse will be open from 2:00 p.m. while the Cruise-In is in progress on the square. Make it an enjoyable day by looking at the cars, eating in one of Blairsville's fine restaurants (or bring a picnic), browsing the Old Courthouse, visiting with the musicians and friends, and enjoying some of the best bluegrass music.

As with the summer concerts presented by the Union County Historical Society, there will be no admission charge. The musicians donate their time and talents. Voluntary donations will certainly be welcomed and appreciated, and all donations will go toward the benefit of the Meals on Wheels program.

In support of the Meals on Wheels program, the Union County Historical Society and the Collins Brothers will give each person who donates fifteen dollars ($15.00) or more to Meals on Wheels a complimentary copy of the CD which the Collins Brothers recorded at The Old Courthouse on the Square.
